Between the Pipes

A foray in goaltending, athletics and development

ANSIMOV DOESN'T GET AN ASSIST BUT HE SHOULD...

I quite often share my goaltender insights about goal-scoring and scoring chances with the teams and the coaching staff with whom I work.  In fact, how goals happen against a goalie maybe the one thing in which my personal experience has made me an expert.

One of the biggest things I like to share is the importance of screening the goalie.  The below video clip is perfect, because I usually use the name Pekka Rinne as my example.  I tell teams that, "if you want to make Pekka Rinne look like an atom house league goalie, hide the puck from him".  The video below is a great demonstration of that principle as Rinne waves his glove hand helplessly at "laser" from 50 feet out.  Even though it was a hard shot, a modern goalie, like Rinne, who has a long and clean look at a shot from that far out will snag it easily.

Ansimov hides not only the shot from the top of the umbrella, but disguised two passes from Rinne which also resulted in a late read from the shot and less than optimal depth by Rinne when the shot was finally released.
