Dealing with Injuries that Require Surgery

I'm hoping this article doesn't apply to too many of my goalies, but as the spring comes around, some goalies are going into surgery to repair nagging injuries.  The long layoff season seems like an ideal time to do what many have put off and may have even aggravated during the season.

As I have said to kids that have had to go under the knife that it is not time to relax and fall out of shape.  If you are serious about your sport, injured and rehabbing athletes have as much work ahead of them, if not more, than the healthy players in terms of training.  It is well known that in the NHL, injured players are usually the first to arrive at the rink and the last to leave during practice days due to the requirements of both their rehab and staying in shape.

Anyways, Maria Mountain, with her experience as exercise specialist at a sports medical centre, has written an excellent article for both goalies and coaches to read about surgical rehab.  As she points out in the article, that she is not a doctor, nor am I, and all information provided is based on her observations through her job.  All ideas and concepts should be vetted through your doctors and physiotherapists.

Take some time to read her article over at InGoal Magazine.
